PhoneBook Plus and PhoneBook DA is multi-featured DA and program set with many niceties for handling that long list of names and addresses usually managed by a Rolodex, Hypercard, or some other clumsy tool. It sports the slickest interface around, extensive phone dialing features, envelope printing, and a robust phone call timer. For those of you who never found the perfect phone DA, this may be it!
PhoneBook Plus has all of the features the DA has, plus it can open multiple files, import and export text files, print reports and display the phone log.
New Features Since 2.1.2
The menu is now in the menu bar and not in a popup menu
There is a Special Keys item that shows you what the special shift and option sequences are.
You can print the currently selected record out as an envelope. See the Special Keys dialog box for some important tips here. Another important tip is that youユll get best results if you set up your page for Landscape (wide) printing and feed the envelope through the long way through the center of the printerユs ヤthroat.ユ
There is a Phone Log feature that can be turned on automatically each time you make a call, or can be turned on ヤmanuallyユ by you. If you turn on the timer by dialing, PhoneBook displays a Start button which you should click when you actually connect. PhoneBook will time the call until you click Stop. For each call, PhoneBook records the vital information plus the Long Distance Access Code and an optional Log Code (see the Dialing Options box). This information is stored in a file in your System Folder called ヤPhoneBook Log.ユ Youユll need PhoneBook Plus to read and display this information. Again, see the Special Keys dialog box for some important information about using the phone timer.
Some new special key sequences have been added.
There is a new PhoneBook Plus program that you can get as a separate download. As mentioned before, PhoneBook Plus lets you print out reports from a PhoneBook file or a PhoneBook Log file of phone call records. For phonebooks, you can print all the fields, with or without the notes field, or just the names and phone numbers. Reports for the phone timer log are extremely flexible, and you can send them to the printer, a text file, or just a display window. PhoneBook Plus also lets you import tab-delimited text files, again with extreme flexibility.
Update Notes:
2.3.1: Fixed a bug in Print Envelopes which resulted in both envelope styles appearing as the same thing.
2.3.2: Fixed a bug in Dialing Options which caused the DA to bomb if you clicked on the popup menu. Added left and right arrow keys which switch between letters in the main window.
2.3.3: Fixed a bug in the edit window which meant that changes made to existing records werenユt saved.
2.3.4: Fixed yet another bug in the edit window. The file was not being marked as changed when a record was added or changed. Unless you changed preferences, the file wasnユt being saved.
2.4: Adjusted the way PhoneBook hangs up the modem to force some models to behave. Also fixed a bug that resulted in a crash when you pressed the return or enter keys when no name was selected (i.e., the list was blank). Fixed a bug that resulted in envelopes not printing on ImageWriters. Fixed a bug that prevented you from entering returns into the return address field. And lastly, fixed a very persistent bug that caused the Find to bomb on some machines.
Also added another popup menu to Envelope Options that lets you specify how the envelope is fed through the printer. If you use the old LaserWriter, which feeds through the center, you wonユt have to adjust this (the default is center). If you use a Personal LaserWriter or an ImageWriter, which feed best from the bottom and top sides respectively, you can take your pick. If you use an ImageWriter, you will have better luck printing if you set your Page Setup orientation to A4 Envelope Tall and set your Printer Alignment to Top. If you select Top or Bottom, PhoneBook DOES use the Vertical Height parameter, contrary to what some versions of the printed documentation say.
2.4.1: Fixed a bug in Envelope Printing. Envelope Height was being used for the indent and vice versa.
2.4.2: Fixed a long-standing bug that caused the General Options dialog box to bomb when invoked.
2.4.3: Fixed a bug that caused files to be corrupted if you removed information from the phonebook.
2.4.4 was never released.
2.4.5: Cmd-Q was not working. Added a feature so that if you hold down the option
key while typing Cmd-Q (Cmd-Opt-Q), PhoneBook will quit without saving changes EVEN IF YOU MADE CHANGES. This is handy if you are just fiddling around, for instance, you typed in an address that you donユt want to save because you wanted to print an envelope.
2.5: Added the ability to change the display font (the font used in the list and in the edit window) from the General Preferences dialog box. This option is mainly for users of KanjiTalk, but anyone else who prefers another font to Geneva can use it too. For best readability, use a font for which you have a 9-point font installed.
2.6: Many new features and bug fixes. PhoneBook Plus now contains all the functions of PhoneBook DA plus everything else it used to do. It can also open multiple phonebooks simultaneously and cut/copy/paste between them. The Import interface has been improved. PhoneBook now remembers the last file you had open and opens that one by default. Preferences are now stored in a separate file in the System folder (separate from the phonebook) so if you copy someone elseユs phonebook, you donユt lose your preferences. Thereユs a new ヤRespect Local Area Codeユ option that lets you specify that numbers in the local area code shouldnユt be treated as long distance numbers. The reports have been revamped, a lot of interface has been cleaned up, and there are a few more key shortcuts. The interface for specifying Envelope Setup has been greatly improved.
As far as bugs go, both PhoneBook Plus and PhoneBook DA should be fully System 7.0 compatible under 24 or 32 bit mode with or without virtual memory and should be compatible with all machine types. These versions are much more stable in all aspects. Problems with the notes section are a thing of the past. PhoneBook now beeps if youユve typed too many characters, and the maximum number of characters in the notes section has been increased to 512. Problems on Pluses and Classics have been fixed.
2.6.1 Late bug fixes (these things NEVER pop up until you release itノ)
Under System 7.0, if there is no preferences file, PhoneBook now looks for the Main PhoneBook file in the System Folder instead of the Preferences folder. Printing Envelopes with a return address now prints the return address you enter, not the recipientユs address.
2.6.1a Fixed a bug in the DA that caused a System crash if you used Escape or Cmd-Q to quit.
2.6.2 Fixed the bug that prevented the modem from dialing. Fixed the bug that prevented the Cut/Copy/Paste keys from working in the dialog box, and that made an S or B appear when you typed Cmd-S or Cmd-B. Smarted up the list draw to fix some rare problems that resulted in unusual font style displays in the PhoneBook window.
2.6.3 Fixed the bug that caused a ヤcユ to appear when you tried to Copy in the Edit dialog with Cmd-C. Also fixed printing on spooling printers like the ImageWriter and DeskWriter. The DA now works properly if you choose PhoneBook from the Apple menu when the DA was already running.
2.6.4 Maintenance version. Cmd-X, C, and V in the edit window are now interactive with other programs. For instance, you can open a word processing document, select an address, copy it, switch to Phonebook and paste it into a new record. Or you can open Phonebookユs edit window, copy a phone number, and paste it into a database. Before, you could only cut, copy and paste between fields in the edit window.
2.6.5 Several new features have been added:
1) The Log Options dialog box has been changed to Preferences and is accessed in the File Menu in PhoneBook Plus. To bring up the dialog box, choose Preferences when a Log File window is frontmost.
2) PhoneBook now supports extremely large files (>4000 names or so). It is NOT recommended that you try this many names with the DA. However, with PhoneBook Plus, if you increase the memory partition in the programユs Get Info window (to 2000 or more), PhoneBook will have enough memory to contain that many records.
3) Preferences set in the Preferences dialog box are now stored in the phonebook files instead of in the preferences file in your folder. That means that you can display last name first in one file but not another. You can also have different fonts and log files for different phonebooks.
4) Speaking of fonts, you can now set the display font size to either 9, 10 or 12. This affects the list display as well as the editor and reports (if you are using PhoneBook Plus). PhoneBook resizes the fields in the editor and the editor window to match the font and size you pick. If you pick a combination that is too large for your monitor, PhoneBook tells you to pick a different size.
This should especially please users who donユt normally use Geneva, like KanjiTalk users.
5) You can also specify font size for Phone Log windows too.
6) There is a new option in Preferences for phonebook files. If Confirm File Deletes is on, PhoneBook asks you if you really want to delete a record (like it worked before). Otherwise, it just deletes it.
7) PhoneBook now remembers the last file you had open (unless it was an unsaved file) and tries to open it upon startup. In previous 2.6.x versions, it remembered the last file you SAVED. In versions previous to 2.6, the default file had to be in the System Folder and named メMain Phonebook.モ
The first time you run the new version, it may ask you to select a file, but after that, it will remember where the file was.
8) Some no-longer needed (or stupid) features have been taken out. Type-search sensitivity is removed (itユs always Fast) as has Pause After Initialization in the Dial Setup box (itユs always Long).
9) Thereユs a new field in Dial Setup called Modem Initialization. It lets you send a Hayes command to the modem after itユs open. For example, if you want to turn off your modemユs speaker before dialing, enter メatm0モ (number 0).
10) Thereユs a new way to enter carriage returns into the address and memo fields when importing text files. Place a double slash (//) wherever you want a carriage return. This wonユt work in any fields but the address and memo fields.
When PhoneBook Plus exports to a text file, it replaces carriage returns with double slashes, so you can export and import files and still maintain your carriage returns.
